Topic — safe web browsing. We've prepared a serial for you. Each part focuses on one topic. No theory, just tips, tricks, and how-tos.

Topic: Safe web browsing We've put together a "serial". Each instalment focuses on one topic. No theory — just tips, tricks & how-tos and tools I use myself. Most of them will be open source.
  1. Don't store passwords in the browser; turn off auto-fill of personal data.
  2. Keep your browser up to date and remove unused add-ons / extensions.
  3. Use a browser that doesn't spy on you too much. Good candidates: Brave (*1) or Firefox (*2). You can also use Chrome or Microsoft Edge — with a few add-ons installed, the spying isn't quite so bad.
  4. Set the default search engine to one that doesn't track you, e.g. DuckDuckGo (*3) — search results will be a bit worse than Google's.
  5. Don't visit any site that isn't HTTPS-secured (the padlock icon).
  6. Block trackers and optionally ads with a browser extension — Privacy Badger (*4) or uBlock (*5).
  7. Regularly clear cookies, temporary files, and the cache. You can use an extension like Cookie-AutoDelete (*6) for automatic clearing.
  8. Consider using Decentraleyes (*7) to reduce trackable CDN (Content Delivery Network) requests.
  9. Consider separating browsing areas (e.g. work, social, shopping, etc.) to limit tracking. You can do this with Firefox containers or browser profiles.
  10. Test your browser configuration with Panopticlick (*8).
Want anonymity? Here you go. — For anonymous browsing, use Tor Browser (*9) and don't sign into any of your personal accounts!
