3-2-1 start? No — backup :-)
Here we go again — backups. In my experience everyone tells me they have it covered. Reality often disappoints, especially when the backup is the only thing left.
Here we go again — backups. In my experience everyone tells me they have it covered. Reality often disappoints, especially the moment a backup is actually needed.
The 3-2-1 rule, plus one extra recommendation.
- keep at least three copies of your data
- store the copies on two different media (storage devices)
- keep one backup off-site
- make sure an attacker can't delete or encrypt your backups
OK, but explain it for non-IT folks.
Having three copies means: in addition to your live data, keep at least two more copies as backup.
What about different media? The point is to avoid common failure modes. What does that mean? Don't store backups on the same device as your live data — put them on a dedicated backup NAS (network-attached storage) instead.
An off-site backup is probably obvious to everyone. It's sometimes called an offsite backup.
And the bonus rule?
If your backup hardware supports it, turn on snapshots. Even if your backups get encrypted, snapshots let you roll back in time and may save the most important thing you have — your DATA.
